The days of mistyped web addresses in the location bar may be over with URL Fixer, a Firefox extension by Christopher Finke that corrects common mistakes when typing web addresses. Specifically, it checks for proper protocol prefixes (http, https, ftp) and US and international top level domains (TLDs, like .com, .net, .org, .mil, .edu, .com.pe, .edu.ar, etc.).
For example if you write mozilla.fom in the location bar it will change it to mozilla.com as the .fom TLD is invalid. According to URL Fixer users’ feedback it works pretty well and the author keeps refining the check/correct mechanism. You can optionally set it to ask for confirmation before correcting the web address right-clicking in the location bar. Minimal user interface for better usability.
